Demetrios Papakostas was born in Montreal in 1960.

Papakostas’ work is characterized by his bold technical investigation, colour spatial and perception. He works primarily in oil, acrylic and watercolour and is interested in work that highlights his passion for geometric abstraction and colour field paintings.

He was first struck by the serene vast washes of Mark Rothko’s paintings and his perception that his art was intended to be a spiritual experience for his audience. Ad Reinhardt was also an influence and that he wanted his audience to stop and look a little closer at his minimalist colour work. Papakostas was also influenced by the works of some Montreal hard-edge painters, namely, Guido Molinari and Claude Tousignant.

“I have a deeply held conviction that art must speak from, and to, heart, mind and soul.”

Demetrios’ thoughtful inquiries into the subtleties of the relationship between abstract thinking and the human condition are his need to communicate our journey through life and the issues we face as we make that voyage.

Papakostas has participated in numerous exhibitions in his career as a contemporary artist. His paintings have been featured internationally at Gallery Art 45 in Athens, Greece, at Gallery Latitude 44 in Toronto, Ontario and in Montreal, Quebec at Galerie Espace, Galerie E.K.Voland, Galerie Erga and most recently, Galerie de la Ville.

He is represented by Denison Gallery in Toronto, Galerie Erga in Montreal, Canada and 1515 Lincoln Gallery in Oklahoma City, USA.
